Curly Maple Square

This square cutting board has a slightly smaller footprint, but gets the job done with most small to medium sized kitchen tasks. Made out of a solid slab of figured hard maple, this one also makes a really cool statement piece sitting on your kitchen counter. The triangle "handle" makes it easy to... handle. Or hang on the wall. Or whatever. I thought it looked cool when I made it.

The figuring in this board is referred to "chattoyance," which is caused by the tree being under stress as it grows, causing the grain to curl back on itself. This results in an effect that basically looks like waves within the wood. This is an amazing and beautiful 3D look that changes as you look at the wood from different angles.
